Kuttabul Win Both Grades at Home

05/09/10

A try on the last play of the match gave Kuttabul a 19-16 win over Mackay City at Lions Park in the Mackay rugby union premiership on Saturday.

A committed Cities pushed the defending premiers right to the wire and were probably unlucky not to come away with the points.

The Camelboks have yet to win a penalty count this season and Cities was able to capitalise on the ref's whistle with three penalty goals, giving them a 9-5 lead at half time.

After Cities No.8 Cory Fry scored from a charged down kick, they looked to have snatched a deserved victory. Trailing 16-12 late in the game, Kuttabul relied on their forward pack to claw themselves back into Cities territory.

Winning is a culture and Kuttabul were able to work themselves into a position where lock Ben Hockey was able to crash over next to the posts and seal a win for the home side.

Best for the Camelboks were Neil Willis, Garry Horrigan and Dan Buitendagg, while for Cities Chris Coxson, Andrew Satini and Ryan Edkins were standouts.

Kuttabul 19 (tries Garry Horrigan, Ben Hockey, Calum McConnell, conversions: Mitch Coles 1, Calum McConnell 1) d Mackay City 16 (try Cory Fry, 1 conversion 3 penalties Ryan Edkins).

Kuttabul also won the 2nd Grade match 26-12 to stay in the top two on the ladder. A super-sized Damian Royan, fresh from a stint in the Vegas night spots, scored two tries and pulled off several big hits in defence. Willie and his boy Willie Jnr were also busy in both attack and defence.
