05/09/10

Lock Ben Hockey got the Boks off to a good start when he hit a nice line on the edge of the ruck to score a fine 30m try. Kuttabul then constructed a good team try, with winger Neil Willis finishing off the set piece. Bowen hit back with a soft try on the edge of Kuttabul's ruck to take the score to 17-10 at half time.
After the break, Mitch Coles was able to free Neil Willis up and send him on a long run down the left side. Willis showed good speed and precision when he drew and passed back to Coles to send him under the sticks. Bowen narrowed the gap with their only second half try and kept them within reach. Mitch Coles saw the Boks home with a successful penalty into a stiff breeze.

Reserve Grade went down 25-12 in the earlier match. Garry Bartlett, Chris Kneipp and George Manu out in the backs. George Manu, the son of Kuttabul's popular prop Oscar, played an eye-catching game. Dan Buitendag and Brett White troubled the Bowen forwards with hard running and staunch defence. Buitendag proved a headache for the Mud Crabs as he continually pilfer ball at the ruck.
