First XV 09/10 Away to Bowen, 30/05/09
A gallant 14 man Kuttabul squad held off a second half surge by the Bowen Mudcrabs to remain unbeaten. Travelling to Bowen, only to find only 14 men, the team started with a makeshift front row of Ivan Tito and Chris Kniepp moving into different positions. It looked early that even with 14 men the Boks were going to be able to be very competitive when Louis Kearn got up to his usual tricks and bust through the line and outpaced the backs to score under the posts with Benny converting (7-0 Boks). Louis was involved in the next try when a break from the No.8 position allowed him to set up Neil Willes down the right hand touch line. Neilly approached the full back and with a great chip, an even better bounce and an even more incredible juggling act, Neilly had Kuttabuls second try (14-0 Boks). Both sides seemed panicky when contained in their own quarter and pressure on the Camelboks gave Bowen an opportunity and they scored out wide. A penalty to Kuttabul and the halfs scoring was done. (17-5 Halftime)
With the breeze in the second half and clearly the more dominant team in the first half Kuttabul were expected to go on with it after the break. Bowen had other ideas and come out and continually put pressure on the Kuttabul defence. The second half saw the Camelboks repel wave after wave of Bowen attack until allowng one try midway through and another approaching full time. Both conversions were unsuccessful and with 10 minutes remaining the Camelboks were up 17-15 and still under serious pressure. Bowen looked to have stolen the win when they broke the line and had beaten the Kuttabul fullback when Neilly threw out a desparation ankle tap to bring the Bowen attacker just metres from the line with the ball being spilt in the process. Kuttabul were able to get some ball and wear down the clock and hang on for victory.
It was truly one of the great Camelbok victories!!!
